The CMS said it will fine specialty hospitals $10,000 a day for failing to report their financial structure to the agency and require such hospitals to disclose to patients their financial relationships with physicians. The steps are part of a regulatory oversight plan announced as the CMS allowed a federal moratorium on new specialty hospitals expire today.

Medicare payment hold period

As part of the Deficit Reduction Act of 2006, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will withhold Medicare payments from Sept. 22-30. Payments on claims that would have been paid during these nine days will be made Oct. 2, that month’s first business day. Because of this one-time hold, CMS will not impose interest or late penalties on entities or individuals for any delay in payment.
