Legislatures in 38 states introduced 121 bills aimed at promoting healthcare information technology in 2005 and 2006, including 36 bills in 24 states that passed and were signed into law, according to a report released by the eHealth Initiative, a consortium of health plans, healthcare IT vendors, providers, laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, medical-device makers and other healthcare organizations promoting IT use in healthcare.

Earlier this week, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) announced a work plan, outline 25 hospital-related investigations planned for 2007.

In addition to the announcement, OIG offered guidance where regulators will be focused. One area of particular interest is the performance of surgery designated “Inpatient Only” which are being performed in outpatient facilities. Other areas receiving attention include the medical appropriateness of DRG coding and the use of diagnostic imaging in Emergency Rooms.
