The CMS said it will phase in a new weighting system for inpatient diagnosis-related groups over three years rather than fully convert to the cost-based system in 2007 as previously proposed. About 2% of hospitals will see their payments fall as a result of the new weighting system.

MedPac Considers Hospital Cuts

The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) yesterday discussed reducing the hospital update in 2008.
MedPAC observed that the prospective payment systems currently fail to adequately reimburse for clinical and health information technology. Medicare only reimburses 92 cents on the dollar for beneficiary costs and that nearly two-thirds of hospitals treating Medicare patients are losing money.
